What is a metal allergy in Total Knee Replacement.

As the population ages and we have many more knee replacements ahead of us, we are looking towards minimizing complications of total knee replacements in the future.  While a minor problem in the past, percentages and rates of nickel allergies are not decreasing.  Furthermore, we may be finding that knees are failing because of metal allergies that are never diagnosed.
What are we doing at Atlanta Bone and Joint Specialists to help?  We've created the first page of its kind,
the metal allergy and nickel sensitivity page  that is a dedicated resource for patients to learn how to identify those with metal allergies as well as how to prevent them from occurring after knee replacement.  Currently there are two knees on the market designed to prevent metal allergy.  Smith and Nephew and their Oxinium knee, and the Aesculap Advance Surface knee.
We stand with Aesculap, as their data is far superior to any other company when it comes to metal ion release.  To our knowledge, they are the only company who's design does not allow metal ions to leave the implant and cause a metal sensitivity reaction in the knee joint tissues.
The Aesculap knee, one of the most used knee replacements in Germany, is produced less than 2 hours from Mercedes-Benz in a region known for its precision-engineering and top-of-the-line quality products with the finest methods and materials.
The A.S (Advanced Surface, USA; Allergy Solution EU) knee- which is used by the surgeons at Atlanta Bone and Joint Specialists is called the Advanced Surface knee as it is a hard, non bendable and stiff surface that has theoretical improvements in plastic wear compared to traditional knee replacements.  In the United States. the "Allergy Solutions" nomenclature has not been approved by the FDA, however, in Europe, the FDA equivalent oversight group has approved the A.S. to stand for Allergy Solution (knee replacement).
As our group strives to improve your outcome, we are looking at every reason a knee replacement may fail and staying ahead of the curve with superior total knee replacement results.
