What is a concussion?

Concussion Symptoms
|
A concussion is when the head recieves a hit, blow or force causing the brain to move rapidly back and forth with its place in the skull. When this occurs, there can be a temporary loss of conciousness, residual headache, neck pain, memory loss and more. As the NFL studies have shown, long term sequela of untreated concussions can lead to encephalopathy (early deterioration of the brain tissue) causing behavioral problems and memory loss.

A New Era
With concussion research over the last few years, Atlanta Bone and Joint Specialists have adopted the CDC guidelines and information into their practice to help those with sports related concussions. We have the resources to do pre and post testing for concussions and return to play suggestions. We practice evidence based medicine with our goal to prevent long term brain damage and protect our athletes from harm.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Diagnosis and treatment of concussions depend on the severity of the concussion. New guidelines essentially show that in order to return to sport, there must be complete resolution of all concussion symptoms. This also includes a standardized test called the ImPACT Test which is performed prior to a sports season to get a baseline read. This test involves short term memory, recall, focus and simple problem solving. After a possible concussion, this test is performed again and the score is compared to the prior score. If there are major differences, the test is positive and continued testing and rest is recommended.
