Same-Day Cortisone Shots and Joint Injections in Atlanta

When knee, shoulder, hip, elbow or other joint pain suddenly flares, you should not always have to wait weeks for an orthopedic evaluation. Atlanta Bone & Joint Specialists offers urgent and same-day appointments when available, digital X-rays and physician-directed cortisone injections when medically appropriate.

404-298-3730 Schedule an Appointment Online

Same-day availability is not guaranteed. A clinical evaluation is required before any injection, and the physician may recommend X-rays, MRI, medication, therapy or another treatment instead.

Orthopedic evaluation first We identify the likely pain source before deciding whether an injection is appropriate.
Digital X-rays in office Many arthritic and injury-related problems can be evaluated during the same visit.
Injection when appropriate Cortisone may be performed during the visit when the diagnosis and safety assessment support it.
Three convenient offices Orthopedic care in Decatur, Snellville and Loganville, serving the greater Atlanta area.
Fast access to the right treatment

Do You Need a Cortisone Shot Quickly?

A painful arthritis flare, bursitis or inflamed joint often does not require an emergency-room visit. An urgent orthopedic appointment may allow you to be examined, obtain X-rays and begin treatment without spending hours in the ER.

1

Evaluation

Your orthopedic clinician reviews the location, timing and cause of pain and checks for injury, infection, weakness or another condition that may change treatment.

2

Imaging When Needed

Digital X-rays can often be obtained during the appointment. MRI may be arranged when the examination suggests a tendon, ligament, cartilage or other soft-tissue problem.

3

Treatment Plan

If cortisone is appropriate, it may be administered at the visit. Other options can include medication, therapy, bracing, gel injections, PRP or further imaging.

Common injection areas

Joint and Soft-Tissue Problems We Evaluate

The right injection depends on the diagnosis. We evaluate arthritis, bursitis, inflammation and selected tendon or soft-tissue conditions throughout the upper and lower extremities.

Knee Arthritis, inflammation and selected painful knee conditions
Shoulder Bursitis, impingement, arthritis and selected rotator-cuff-related pain
Hip Region Trochanteric bursitis and selected hip-related pain patterns
Elbow Inflammation and selected tendon or joint conditions
Hand and Wrist Selected arthritic, tendon and soft-tissue problems
Ankle and Foot Selected inflammatory and arthritic conditions after evaluation
The honest answer

Can I Get the Cortisone Shot the Same Day?

Often, yes—when an appointment is available and the examination confirms that a cortisone injection is appropriate and safe. We do not promise an injection before evaluating you. Severe pain can come from a fracture, infection, tendon tear, referred pain or another problem that requires a different treatment.

Call and tell us what you need.

Let the scheduling team know that you are seeking an urgent evaluation for a possible cortisone shot. We will help select the appropriate office, clinician and appointment type.

Why the examination matters

A Shot Is a Treatment—Not the Diagnosis

The fastest path to meaningful relief is identifying what is actually causing the pain. The same symptom may come from very different orthopedic problems.

Reasons an injection may help

✓ Symptomatic osteoarthritis in an appropriate joint
✓ Bursitis or localized inflammation
✓ Selected tendon or soft-tissue conditions
✓ A flare that has not improved with reasonable initial care
✓ A condition in which temporary inflammation control supports rehabilitation

Reasons we may recommend something else

✓ Possible fracture or acute structural injury
✓ Concern for infection
✓ Major weakness suggesting a tendon tear
✓ Pain referred from the neck, back or another body area
✓ A diagnosis better treated with therapy, bracing, MRI or surgery
More than one injection option

Orthopedic Injection Treatments

Cortisone is only one option. Your physician may discuss other treatments based on the joint, diagnosis, insurance coverage, prior treatment and goals.

Hyaluronic Acid Gel Injections Often considered for selected patients with symptomatic knee arthritis. Learn about gel injections → PRP Injections Platelet-rich plasma may be discussed for selected tendon, ligament or joint conditions. Learn about PRP → Fast Orthopedic MRI Access MRI at our Snellville location may be scheduled quickly when clinically appropriate. Explore MRI services →
!

Do not wait for a routine injection appointment if the joint may be infected.

Fever, chills, a rapidly worsening hot or red joint, drainage, a recent operation, an open wound, severe illness, loss of circulation or new major numbness requires immediate medical assessment. Call 911 or go to an emergency department for a true emergency.

Frequently asked questions

Cortisone Shot FAQs

Do you offer same-day cortisone shots?
Same-day orthopedic appointments may be available. If the examination confirms that an injection is appropriate and safe, the cortisone shot may be performed during the visit. Availability and treatment are not guaranteed.
Can I schedule only an injection without an examination?
No. A clinician must confirm the diagnosis, review relevant medical history and determine that an injection is appropriate. Pain that seems like arthritis or bursitis may come from another problem.
Are X-rays available at the same appointment?
Digital X-rays are available at our Decatur, Snellville and Loganville offices and may be obtained during the orthopedic visit when indicated.
Which joints can receive a cortisone injection?
Cortisone may be used for selected knee, shoulder, hip-region, elbow, hand, wrist, ankle and foot conditions. The precise location and diagnosis determine whether an injection is appropriate.
How quickly does a cortisone shot work?
Response varies. Some patients notice improvement within several days, while others improve more gradually. The degree and duration of relief depend on the diagnosis and severity of the underlying condition.
Can MRI be arranged if the diagnosis is unclear?
Yes. When medically appropriate, our team can coordinate MRI at the Snellville office. Same-day or one-to-two-day availability may sometimes be possible after any required insurance authorization, depending on scanner availability, the study requested and patient eligibility.
Do you also offer gel and PRP injections?
Yes. Hyaluronic acid gel and PRP may be discussed for selected conditions. They are different treatments from cortisone and may have separate coverage, scheduling and clinical requirements.
