Evaluation
Your orthopedic clinician reviews the location, timing and cause of pain and checks for injury, infection, weakness or another condition that may change treatment.
When knee, shoulder, hip, elbow or other joint pain suddenly flares, you should not always have to wait weeks for an orthopedic evaluation. Atlanta Bone & Joint Specialists offers urgent and same-day appointments when available, digital X-rays and physician-directed cortisone injections when medically appropriate.
Same-day availability is not guaranteed. A clinical evaluation is required before any injection, and the physician may recommend X-rays, MRI, medication, therapy or another treatment instead.
A painful arthritis flare, bursitis or inflamed joint often does not require an emergency-room visit. An urgent orthopedic appointment may allow you to be examined, obtain X-rays and begin treatment without spending hours in the ER.
Your orthopedic clinician reviews the location, timing and cause of pain and checks for injury, infection, weakness or another condition that may change treatment.
Digital X-rays can often be obtained during the appointment. MRI may be arranged when the examination suggests a tendon, ligament, cartilage or other soft-tissue problem.
If cortisone is appropriate, it may be administered at the visit. Other options can include medication, therapy, bracing, gel injections, PRP or further imaging.
The right injection depends on the diagnosis. We evaluate arthritis, bursitis, inflammation and selected tendon or soft-tissue conditions throughout the upper and lower extremities.
Often, yes—when an appointment is available and the examination confirms that a cortisone injection is appropriate and safe. We do not promise an injection before evaluating you. Severe pain can come from a fracture, infection, tendon tear, referred pain or another problem that requires a different treatment.
Let the scheduling team know that you are seeking an urgent evaluation for a possible cortisone shot. We will help select the appropriate office, clinician and appointment type.
The fastest path to meaningful relief is identifying what is actually causing the pain. The same symptom may come from very different orthopedic problems.
Cortisone is only one option. Your physician may discuss other treatments based on the joint, diagnosis, insurance coverage, prior treatment and goals.
Fever, chills, a rapidly worsening hot or red joint, drainage, a recent operation, an open wound, severe illness, loss of circulation or new major numbness requires immediate medical assessment. Call 911 or go to an emergency department for a true emergency.
