FAQ: Rotator Cuff Repair Surgery

Do all rotator cuff tears need surgery?
No. Not every rotator cuff tear requires surgery. Treatment depends on your symptoms, tear size, weakness, activity level, age, goals, and MRI findings. Dr. Jové can review your condition and discuss both surgical and non-surgical options.

When should I consider rotator cuff repair surgery?
Rotator cuff repair may be considered when shoulder pain, weakness, night pain, or loss of function does not improve with conservative treatment, or when an MRI shows a significant tear that is unlikely to heal on its own.

What are signs of a rotator cuff tear?
Common symptoms include shoulder pain, weakness with lifting, pain reaching overhead, pain at night, difficulty sleeping on the shoulder, limited motion, or a feeling that the arm has lost strength.

Can Dr. Jové review my shoulder MRI?
Yes. If you already had a shoulder MRI, Dr. Jové can review the images and report with you during a consultation. This can help determine whether your tear is partial, full-thickness, retracted, or likely to need repair.

What is a supraspinatus tear?
The supraspinatus is one of the main rotator cuff tendons. It is commonly involved in rotator cuff tears. If your MRI says “supraspinatus tear,” it may be worth having a shoulder surgeon review the size and severity of the tear.

Is rotator cuff repair done arthroscopically?
Many rotator cuff repairs are performed arthroscopically using small incisions and a camera. Dr. Jové will discuss whether arthroscopic repair is appropriate based on your tear pattern, tissue quality, and overall shoulder condition.

Is rotator cuff repair outpatient surgery?
Many rotator cuff repairs can be performed in an outpatient surgery center, allowing appropriate patients to go home the same day. Dr. Jové will determine whether outpatient surgery is appropriate for your specific situation.

How long is recovery after rotator cuff repair?
Recovery depends on the size of the tear, the repair performed, your tissue quality, and your therapy progress. Many patients wear a sling after surgery and gradually progress through physical therapy over several months.

Can a rotator cuff tear heal without surgery?
Some partial tears or smaller tears may improve with non-surgical treatment such as activity modification, medication, injections, and physical therapy. Larger full-thickness tears may be less likely to heal on their own.

How do I know if I am a candidate for rotator cuff repair?
The best way to know is to combine your symptoms, exam findings, activity goals, and MRI results. You can complete the rotator cuff candidate check or schedule a consultation with Dr. Jové to review your options.
