Understanding the Report

What Rotator Cuff MRI Findings Can Be Submitted?

MRI reports use specific medical terminology to describe the tendon involved, the size of the injury and other abnormalities within the shoulder.

Your Report May Contain Unfamiliar Language

Terms such as “full-thickness,” “retracted,” “tendinosis,” “atrophy” or “fatty degeneration” can be difficult to interpret without clinical context.

The MRI is important, but symptoms, strength, function, injury timing, age, activity level and physical examination also influence treatment decisions.

Patient-Specific Decisions

A Rotator Cuff Tear on MRI Does Not Automatically Mean Surgery

The written report is only one part of determining what treatment may be appropriate.

What the MRI Helps Show

A shoulder MRI can help identify which rotator cuff tendon is involved, whether the tear is partial or full thickness, the amount of tendon retraction, muscle quality and other abnormalities such as arthritis, bursitis, biceps disease or labral tearing.

What the MRI Cannot Decide Alone

Treatment also depends on pain, weakness, loss of function, whether the injury was sudden or gradual, prior treatment, age, work demands, activity level, medical history and personal goals. A formal recommendation requires an orthopedic history and examination.

Atlanta Shoulder Surgeon

Rotator Cuff Evaluation with Dr. Nathan Jové

Nathan Jové, M.D., is an orthopedic surgeon whose practice includes the evaluation and treatment of partial, full-thickness, traumatic, chronic and massive rotator cuff tears.

When surgery is appropriate, his shoulder practice includes minimally invasive arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, labral and SLAP repair, biceps procedures and additional shoulder reconstruction based on the individual diagnosis.

MRI review requests are screened by Dr. Jové’s orthopedic team to help determine whether an appointment with Dr. Jové may be appropriate. A diagnosis or treatment plan can only be established after a formal evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Rotator Cuff MRI Review FAQs

Is the rotator cuff MRI review free?
Yes. There is no charge to submit a shoulder MRI review request. The review is intended for informational and scheduling purposes and does not replace a formal medical evaluation.
Can I submit only the written MRI report?
Yes. You may submit the radiologist’s written report even when you do not yet have the actual images. Including the MRI images or imaging-center link may provide additional information when available.
Does a full-thickness rotator cuff tear always require surgery?
No. The decision depends on symptoms, weakness, function, tear size, tendon quality, how the injury occurred, age, activity level, prior treatment and examination findings. The MRI alone cannot determine the correct treatment.
What does a supraspinatus tear mean?
The supraspinatus is one of the four rotator cuff tendons. MRI reports may describe tendinosis, a partial-thickness tear or a full-thickness tear. The significance depends on the size and location of the tear as well as the patient’s symptoms and function.
Can this review provide a diagnosis or treatment plan?
No. The upload review does not establish a diagnosis, medical advice, a treatment plan or a doctor-patient relationship. Formal recommendations require an appropriate orthopedic evaluation.
Who reviews my request?
Requests are screened by Dr. Nathan Jové’s orthopedic team to help determine whether an appointment with Dr. Jové may be appropriate. Additional records, imaging or examination may be necessary.
Is this service only for Atlanta patients?
The service is designed primarily for patients in Atlanta, Decatur, Snellville, Loganville and surrounding communities who may be able to pursue an in-person orthopedic consultation with the practice.
Should I use the upload form for an emergency?
No. Do not use the MRI upload form for urgent or emergency medical problems. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department for a medical emergency.
