Matrix-induced Autologous Chondroctye Implantatation (MACI)
What is MACI?
MACI (Matrix-Induced Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation) is an advanced cartilage restoration technique used to treat cartilage defects in the knee. It involves harvesting a patient’s own cartilage cells (chondrocytes), culturing them in a lab to increase their number, and then implanting them back into the damaged area using a specialized collagen membrane.
How does MACI work?
- Cartilage Biopsy: During an initial arthroscopic procedure, a small sample of healthy cartilage is taken from a non-weight-bearing area of the knee.
- Cell Culturing: The harvested cells are sent to a lab where they are cultured and grown on a collagen membrane over several weeks.
- Implantation: In a second surgery, the collagen membrane, now embedded with millions of new cartilage cells, is implanted into the defect and secured with a fibrin sealant.
- Healing: The cells integrate with the surrounding cartilage, gradually restoring the joint surface.
Benefits of MACI
- Personalized Treatment: Uses the patient’s own cells to regenerate cartilage.
- Long-Term Results: Proven effectiveness in improving knee function and reducing pain.
- Minimally Invasive Harvesting: The initial biopsy is done arthroscopically, minimizing tissue damage.
- Versatile: Suitable for various cartilage defects, especially in active patients.
Who is a Good Candidate for MACI?
- Defects usually 1.5-2cm or greater in size
- Individuals with symptomatic cartilage defects in the knee.
- Patients who have not responded to conservative treatments such as physical therapy or injections.
- Typically suited for younger, active patients with isolated cartilage damage.
- Those who wish to maintain an active lifestyle post-surgery.
