Meniscus Repair for Preserving Knee Function

At Atlanta Bone and Joint Specialists, we understand how important healthy knees are for staying active and independent. One of the most common injuries that affects knee health is a torn meniscus. The meniscus plays a vital role in cushioning and stabilizing the joint, and when it is damaged, it can lead to pain, swelling, and long-term complications. Meniscus repair is often the best option for preserving knee function, and knowing what to expect can help patients feel confident about their treatment journey.

Understanding the Meniscus

What the Meniscus Does in the Knee

Each knee has two menisci, which are C-shaped pieces of cartilage that act as shock absorbers between the thighbone and shinbone. They help distribute weight evenly, reduce friction, and stabilize the joint during movement. A healthy meniscus allows the knee to bend, straighten, and rotate smoothly during everyday activities such as walking, climbing stairs, or exercising.

How Tears Affect Knee Health

When the meniscus tears, the cushioning and stability it provides are compromised. Patients often experience pain, stiffness, and swelling, along with a reduced ability to move the knee comfortably. Without proper treatment, a torn meniscus can increase the risk of developing arthritis and other long-term joint problems. Preserving the meniscus through repair, rather than removing it, is often the best way to protect knee health.

Causes and Risk Factors of Meniscus Tears

Sports and Physical Activity

Meniscus tears frequently occur during activities that involve pivoting, twisting, or sudden stops. Athletes who play sports such as basketball, soccer, or tennis are especially vulnerable. A tear may happen when the foot is planted firmly, and the knee rotates unexpectedly.

Age-Related Degeneration

As people age, the meniscus becomes less flexible and more prone to injury. Degenerative tears are common in individuals over 40, even with routine activities like squatting or stepping off a curb. These tears are often associated with underlying arthritis and may develop gradually rather than from a single incident.

Other Contributing Factors

Certain lifestyle and health factors can also increase the risk of meniscus injury. Carrying excess body weight places additional stress on the knee joint. A history of knee injuries may weaken the joint and make the meniscus more susceptible to damage. Jobs or activities that involve repetitive kneeling or squatting can also contribute to wear and tear.

Recognizing the Signs of a Meniscus Tear

Pain, Swelling, and Stiffness

The most common symptoms of a torn meniscus include pain along the joint line, swelling that develops within a day or two of the injury, and stiffness that makes it difficult to bend or straighten the knee fully.

Locking or Catching Sensation

Some patients notice that their knee catches, locks, or gives way during movement. These mechanical symptoms are caused by loose fragments of cartilage interfering with the joint’s normal motion.

Limited Range of Motion

A torn meniscus often restricts how far the knee can bend or straighten. This limitation can make it challenging to perform everyday tasks, from getting out of a chair to climbing stairs.

Diagnosis of Meniscus Injuries

Accurate diagnosis begins with a thorough physical examination. At Atlanta Bone and Joint Specialists, our physicians conduct a thorough physical examination to assess tenderness, swelling, and range of motion before recommending the most appropriate treatment.

Imaging tests are often used to confirm the diagnosis. MRI scans provide detailed images of the cartilage and surrounding tissues, making them especially valuable for identifying the size and location of the tear. In some cases, X-rays may also be used to rule out other conditions, such as arthritis or fractures.

Treatment Options for Meniscus Tears

Conservative Approaches

Not every meniscus tear requires surgery. Smaller tears, particularly those near the outer edge of the cartilage where the blood supply is stronger, may heal with conservative treatment. Rest, anti-inflammatory medications, and physical therapy are often recommended to reduce symptoms and support healing. These treatments can relieve pain and restore function, though they may not be sufficient for more complex tears.

When Surgery Is Needed

Surgical treatment becomes necessary when conservative measures do not provide relief or when the tear interferes with daily function. Persistent pain, swelling, or mechanical symptoms like locking are common reasons for recommending surgery. At Atlanta Bone and Joint Specialists, our goal is always to preserve as much of the natural meniscus as possible, since this provides the best long-term protection for the joint.

Meniscus Repair Surgery

How the Procedure Works

Meniscus repair is typically performed arthroscopically, using small incisions and specialized instruments. The torn edges of the cartilage are carefully stitched together, allowing the meniscus to heal naturally over time. By preserving the tissue, the procedure helps maintain the knee’s ability to absorb shock and distribute weight.

Benefits of Repair Over Removal

In the past, meniscus tears were often treated with the removal of the damaged tissue. While this approach provided short-term relief, it also increased the risk of developing arthritis in the future. Meniscus repair offers the benefit of preserving natural joint function, reducing the likelihood of long-term complications, and keeping the knee healthier for years to come.

Recovery and Rehabilitation

Recovery after meniscus repair requires patience and commitment. Patients usually begin physical therapy soon after surgery, starting with gentle range-of-motion exercises and progressing to strengthening routines. Weight-bearing is often limited in the early stages to protect the repair. Over time, patients regain mobility and strength, with most returning to normal activities within a few months. The exact timeline depends on the extent of the tear and the individual’s healing progress.

Our Approach to Restoring Knee Function

At Atlanta Bone and Joint Specialists, we believe in preserving the natural function of the knee whenever possible. Our team combines advanced surgical techniques with personalized care to create treatment plans tailored to each patient’s needs. Whether through conservative management or surgical repair, our focus is always on achieving the best long-term outcome for knee health.

Take the First Step Toward Stronger, Healthier Knees

A torn meniscus does not have to limit your lifestyle or lead to long-term joint problems. At Atlanta Bone and Joint Specialists, we are here to diagnose your condition, explain your options, and provide expert care that helps restore comfort and function. If you are experiencing knee pain or suspect a meniscus tear, call 404-296-5005 or visit the website today to schedule an appointment and take the first step toward lasting relief and mobility.
